Reiki history

I have mentioned the first step to contribute to the world peace is knowing ourselves. I established my small business. In this business, I offer three modalities to help people to know themselves. The three modalities are Reiki teaching, Horoscope chart reading, and Angel card reading. And I believe these three modalities can be helpful to know ourselves.

Today, I want to talk about my first modality, the Reiki teaching.

I learned Reiki when I was in Japan. During I was processing of my immigrant visa to live in America, one of my friends told me the difference of medical fee between Japan and America. In Japan, medical fee is not as expensive as that of America. She had lived in America for some years and experienced the expensive medical fee. From her experiences, she recommended me to study and learn self-healing methods as much as I could, so that I could possibly reduce the frequency on going to see a doctor in America.

When I started researching about Reiki, I found out there are two main lineages. One is Japanese direct lineage and the other is Western lineage.

Here is a brief introduction of the history of Reiki. Reiki was originated from a Japanese monk, Mr. Mikao Usui, who was living in Kyoto, Japan. After 21-day meditation and fasting, Mr. Usui received a Reiki attunement from the Universe. It was when he was 57 years old in 1922. He had shared what he received with others for the rest of his life. After the WWII, the new government officially prohibited the Japanese traditional healing modalities. So, Reiki teaching/healing was gradually diminished those years.

In such days, one of the third generational Reiki teachers, Mrs. Hawayo Takata, learned Reiki in Japan and started teaching Reiki at her residential area, Kauai Hawaii. She established her Reiki Clinic in Hawaii, and taught 22 students. Her main students were Caucasians living in Hawaii. From her 22 students, Reiki has spread to all over the world. Their teaching method is known as Western Reiki. After spreading worldly, Western Reiki came back to Japan and has continued spreading throughout Japan.

When I started searching for my Reiki teacher, I found out the majority of current Reiki teachers in Japan are the students of Western lineage. I wanted to learn the Japanese direct line, and finally one of my friend introduced to me Hyakuten-san, my Reiki teacher. He established Komyo ReikiDo.

In our lineage, we focus on the spiritual awakening and growth. As we develop our spiritual awareness, we become more humble (letting go of ego) so that we can become a pure pipe for the Reiki healing energy.

I believe Reiki teaching can be a gateway to know our true self. Once we enter the gateway, there is a long way to learn. To me, knowing ourselves and developing our spiritual awareness are closely related to one another. I believe the learning continues for our entire life until we depart from our physical body, even to our next lifetimes.
