Essential words 10/1/2016

When I was a first grader, my teacher taught us a useful technique in the class. I still clearly remember that. She said there were two essential words that we have to use frequently to establish a harmonious human relationship.

The two words were Thank you and Sorry. In Japanese, 「ありがとう」。「ごめんね」。

I think this teaching was pretty common in Japan, taught by many elders to younger children at school and home. I love this teaching.

However, in our daily life, we tend to forget saying these words, especially to our loved ones; our spouses, children, and parents. It is because we tend to take everything for granted. It would make the energy uplifted when we say “thank you for cooking” “thank you for supporting us”.

This teaching can be applied to not only to humans but also to every other things. We should say thank you for our good health when our body functions properly. We should say sorry to our body when we forgot to take good care of it. Same things can be said to our house, car, computer, coffee maker, land, water… Even to our family souls, angels, and ancestors, as well… To everything.

It is easy for everybody to say Thank you, but not easy for some people to say Sorry.

I’ve encountered many business owners or directors who stubbornly avoid saying “sorry”.  Somebody told me they don’t apologize because they don’t want to take it as their fault. But I believe it is not a win or lose. When it comes to building a good relationship with customers in the business, we want to establish a win-win situation. Apologizing for inconvenience to a customer can bring a winning situation, because the customer would feel comfortable for the business owner’s kind consideration.

I believe, these two words function as lubricating oil to prevent any possible causes. Let’s use this helpful words frequently. I believe these two words have great power to make our environment much better than we think.
