Galaxy 1/29/2017

I went to the planetarium again. The part I enjoyed the most was the scene that showed the picture of the Universe as a whole. It started from our planet Earth, then the perspective went back wider and wider, passing through our Solar System, to our closest galaxy, Andromeda Galaxy, bigger galaxy….all the way to bigger and wider vision to the point where we could not recognize our planet Earth anymore.

I felt I can utilize this technique in a daily life. Whenever I can view things from the wider vision as a whole, I can understand the bigger picture and reasons for the things happen. Then, I can become more generous and understandable person.

And, today’s show was especially interesting as it talked about the stars that we can see from our back yard. After we came back home, we went to our backyard and stargazed. We were so thrilled to see exact same stars as we saw at the planetarium. Today, the moon is still new moon, 2 Days of the Moon’s age, so we could see stars pretty clearly.

When we live in a city, we cannot see stars clearly because of city lights. I experienced to see clear stars at very rare occasions.

The first opportunity was when I participated during my kindergarten days. We camped at the middle of nowhere, where there was no city lights. It was pitch dark. The teacher took out a flashlight and pointed one star. Since it was pitch dark, the light made a straight line to a certain star that he pointed. It was like magic. He explained us about the star with the myth or folk tales about the star. I was so fascinated with the stories.

The second opportunity was after the big earthquake in Kobe in 1995. We went through power outage for several days. On those days everybody in that area experienced clear view of stars.

Watching such clear stars brings us back to the old days when our ancestors fully relied on stars for the directions and time. It is interesting to imagine how our ancestors used their night time without the lights that we currently take it for granted.
