Today I received an email from the editorial company. The founder of the editorial company was a former editor at Hay House. The email announced their clients won the prizes in the writer’s contest. The contest was the one I applied.
In Hay House Writer’s Workshop contests, the founder of the editorial company advertised her company and their editorial services. She encouraged the event audience as well as the online learners to hire professional editors, even for the book proposal.

She mentioned about their editorial fee for the average book length will be around $7,500. I am not sure about the editorial fee for the book proposal, but it could start from $1,000 up to $5,000, depending on how much the editor need to help an applicant.
Up until here, it sounds normal, right? However, when you hear that three winners out of six awards were their clients, would you still feel it normal? I thought it is a huge rate. It is 50%. One out of two was their client. So, paying for the professional editorial service from her company slightly raised the rate of winning the contest.
When I read this email announcement from the editorial company, to be honest, I got shocked. I got shocked to know that many people paid for the editorial services, even for the book proposal.
I felt like that in the war area, those people who paid for the professional editors wore an appropriate armor with an appropriate weapon while I was wearing just a casual T-shirt and pants with holding a handmade bow and arrow. I got embarrassed to apply for the contest without any professional support.
As for me, I just prayed for miracle to happen. I didn’t think about hiring the professional editors to win at the contest. Hiring the professional editors might be a small test on how serious I was to win the contest.
I admit that I got shocked. But also, I am thankful for this email announcement. It opened my eyes. At least it asked me how serious I am for publishing my books.
My parents told me very often that paying for study will never be useless. They told me school fee and class fee are the most solid investments to myself. Everything that I study or learn will stay with me forever. Paying for the professional editorial service will be the same, the investiment for myself.
