Last night I attended the workshop sponsored by the local university. The target audience was small business owners, and the topic was to discover your customers.
The speaker shared his personal knowledge on how to discover your customers.
Here are some tips that I learned from the speaker today.

In order to widen your potential, first, ask advice to your family member. Usually your mom is the best person to ask for advice. Second, fully utilize your network. – This is true. Your family is on your side but they can see situations and potential customers more objectively than you do. Indeed, people is eager to help you. When you ask for help, they are willing to help with whatever they can.
Then, the speaker shared some technique in writing an email. Take time to write an email. Start taking about some common ground, such as “we met at the workshop the other day” or “I am a friend of your coworker”. This helps the email receiver to recognize that you are a regiment person, not spam. Take time to create some template based on the situation.
Finally, the speaker shared some technique in a phone conversation. He demonstrated four patterns in different situations. During the conversation, let a customer talk — refrain taking over the topic. This is your valuable opportunity to know your customer. Take a memo of any of your impression or thoughts about the customer. Write down about what kind of topic a customer likes or dislikes. In case a customer navigates the topic to negative way, take a lead to change it to a positive way. This resonates me very well. I feel the best technique to navigate a great conversation is to listen carefully to the other.
This workshop was beneficial for me. These types of tips and technique cannot be gained in school. Rather, we can gain through our direct experiences in daily life. I am away from business world for these 10 years. So, it was good for me to refresh my memory on how to navigate a conversation in positive way.
