Today my husband and I had a conversation with a man at an organization on the phone. The organization is specifically for Native American people to help them to buy a house by giving some advice.
Within some minutes, we recognized the guy was a Native American. We didn’t ask his of his tribe, but we are sure he is.
There are some unique aspects to show when the speaker is Native American. Such aspects are shown in their way of pronunciation, their way of speaking speed, and their way of explaining things. Among all, they have unique sense of humor. When they say something funny, they don’t say it with laughing, nor changing the voice pitch tone up and down. Rather, they say it slowly and in a pretty calm voice tone pitch. It sounds like the person is out of the scene, observing things from outside, in a calm state.

I liked how this man explained things. In the conversation, he often said “that’s how it goes.” I often heard Native American people said this way. Based on my personal experiences, I feel many Native people are cautious. They don’t jump in any situation. They start observing. They carefully observe people and situation.
When I was young, one Native old guy often scolded me. He used to tell me “Don’t jump in. Don’t take chance. Observe first.” Those days, I didn’t like being scolded by anybody. Whenever he scolded me, I would stick out my tongue to him in my mind (I didn’t actually do it to him, just in my imagination).
Now that I am older than that time, I appreciate him for teaching me that way. Now I understand that observation is important and helpful for better understanding. I think this is one of their wisdom passed down generation by generation.
