On our recent family trip, we visited Oregon. At the gas station, when I was about to grab the pump, one young male worker grabbed it quickly before me. I was bewildered. At first I thought he wanted some cash money. Back in several years ago, when I was visiting my boy-friend-at-that-time in Los Angeles, I experienced some people offered us to wipe off our car window shield to earn some tip.
I didn’t have any cash with me handy in my pocket, so I told him so. He started laughing and told me he didn’t need tip. Besides, he told me his company prohibits to accept workers to receive any tips. Then, he explained only Oregon and New Jersey, by law, gas station attendants have to pump the gas. The customers are not allowed to pump by themselves.
After we came back from the trip, I read the news about the new Oregon law. Effective on January 1st 2018, the new law allows customers to pump their own gas at stand-alone gas stations in counties with fewer than 40,000 residents in Oregon.
People reacted to this law. Some are happy for this change, and others are against of the change.

My personal opinion about this new law? I am happy for this change even though I am not an Oregonian. When I went to the gas station in Oregon, some gas station had only one attendant at the pump, and I needed to wait for the attendant. It was simply inconvenient.
The disagreed people point out about elderly people and moms with a new born baby, who need this service.
So, the solution might be to have two different types of gas stations. One is for self-service and the other is for full-service. They can set the gas price of self-service as slightly lower than that of full-service. I believe some gas stations in Japan are like that. The customers can choose.
It is always good to leave the decision to a customer based on their preference and needs.
