I watched the movie Downsizing (2017). It talks about the overpopulation in the world. As one of the contributions, a scientist team succeeded to develop a new procedure to shrink humans to small size of five inches tall.
I am not going to talk about the detailed story of this movie to save your fun in case you are planning to watch it. I liked the ending. It leaves up to the individual audience to decide what they want to do, either to go on to the Noah’s Ark or to stay where you are and do what you can do there. I will stay where I stand and do what I can do the best there.
I like the sub main character in this movie. She acts as a Philippine woman and she speaks broken English. At the beginning, many audience might feel her as rude because of how she speaks. She does not know English well, so she doesn’t pay attention to the proper grammar or word choice. She speaks up directly from her heart.

I was drawn to my feeling toward the sub character. It reminds me of myself of years ago.
When I moved to America, many people might have thought me as rude because of my broken English. Many people looked down upon me because of my broken English and ignorance in their way of doing things. I could sense by skin how the people got offended by my broken English. That discouraged me to go outside from my home. In a way, it still continues that way. By thinking back of those days, I still think I did pretty well for having done with the best ability and knowledge I had at that time.
Now that I went through the experience, I at least will not get offended by somebody’s broken English. I will do my best to understand what they are trying to say, so that they can adjust themselves as soon as possible, without feeling isolated.
I believe that is how we can make ourselves to a nice person. A kind person is the person who had gone through their tough moments in the past and know the pain.
Every day’s experience will be your power and better understanding for the future. Even a bad experience can play a great role in the future. Because all the experience will make you learn from them.
When we run into somebody who speaks broken English, before considering the person as rude or stupid, let’s take a moment and imagine what kind of toughness the person might have gone through to come to the foreign country. Just one or two imagination might be able to make us to be open minded and accept the person without judgment.
