About one week ago, upon receiving my passport, the representative of Japanese Consulate General asked me to update some information that I registered as emergency contact throrgh their webpage. While I was browsing their homepage to update the information, luckily enough I happened to reach at the useful information.
It is about Japanese school textbooks. They provide textbooks to the Japanese children who currently live in a foreign country, in case their family is planning to go back to Japan and live there for the near future.
We are qualify for this condition. My husband and I have often talked about going back to Japan and live there. My husband recently has started taking the online course for one computer certificate. With the certificate, which is very difficult to pass though, we can definitely apply for the IT job position in Japan.
In order to request the textbook, I needed to enclose the passport copy of mine and my daughter’s, along with postal stamps and an envelope for return shipping. The representative told me they can send the textbooks only for the child’s current grade, as a general rule, but if they have enough in stock, they might be able to send the textbooks of previous grade, exceptionally. So, I added a letter requesting them to send 1st and 2nd grader’s textbooks if they can. I enclosed extra stamps and envelopes.
Today I received the textbooks for 3rd grader. It contains 9 textbooks. Japanese language, math, music, art and craft, calligraphy, moral education, anatomy, social study, and science.
I was surprised at the contents. Based on the textbooks, they already can read and write hiragana, katanaka, and even Kanji.
At my daughter’s elementary school, they don’t use any textbooks. I can somewhat know what they are studying from their homework. As far as I remember from her homework print outs, their learning speed and level are much slower and lower than Japanese schools. It is just based on my personal observation though.

My daughter still has another one more month left for her summer vacation. After receiving the textbooks, I have been pondering on how I can teach her. Since these textbooks are for the third grader, it is definitely too advanced for my daughter to learn. I hope they will send the textbooks for the 1st grader and the 2nd grader, so that she can start from the beginning.
Anyways, I appreciate to the Japanese government for their kindness. Thank you…
