I started reading the book; Tall woman: the life story of Rose Mitchell, a Navajo woman written by Rose Mitchell.
It is interesting to know how the old days’ of life; life of her grandparents before the U.S. Cavalry came was. At that time The People needed to move around and hide from their enemies of Ute, Apache, Pueblos, and Mexicans. The women used to have many children but not all of them grew up to adult or old age. Many children died in baby or young. At that time it was their custom for sisters to share one husband. Since they lived away from the hospital, when somebody got sick, they relied on a hand-trembler for diagnose and then go to a singer for prayers and ceremonies.
When she was young, there was no wells. They needed to dig a hole for water. There was no store to buy a bucket, so they used the skin of a young goat to carry water. She and her family ate rabbits, prairie dogs, and wild nuts and berries. Most of them walked around without shoes because buckskin was not always available for everybody.
It is interesting to know how old people used to live. It is not very old, but just 100 years ago, our great-grandparents’ age.
