My daughter had the routine checkup of her orthodontics. It has been almost 2 years since she has started it. The orthodontist said it would be another 6 months or so for her to complete it. Then she will be wearing a retainer. According to the orthodontist, the retainer will be for life. I don’t know exactly what the modern type of retainer. When I had the retainer after wearing the braces, I was instructed to wear the retainer only for 2 years. I believe the modern retainer is in much higher quality than the old aged ones.
