犬に噛まれてＥＲへ行った翌日は、ナバホ警察へ出頭しなければならなかった。 ここで、保留地内の野良犬事情を、簡単に説明しておきたい。 保留地内には野良犬が多い。この背景にはナバホの人々の貧しさがある。保留地内には十分な仕事がない。なんでも保留地内の失業率は７０％だとか…。 自分達が食べていくだけで精一杯なのだから、犬や猫を去勢・避妊手術してやるという余裕などない。 手術にも金がかかるからだ。 犬猫が子供を産むと、エサをやる費用を浮かす為、こっそりどこかに捨てる。 そうやって、野良犬や野良猫の数が、どんどんと増えていくのである。 保留地内では野良犬に噛まれるという事件が続出している。そこでナバホ警察はある法律を定めた。犬に噛まれたら警察に報告すること。どの場所でどんな犬だったのかを詳しく報告しなければならない。それを元に警察はその犯人犬を見付けて射殺するのである。 この法律は、病院側にも徹底通知されている。患者が「警察に報告しました」或いは「治療後、直ちに警察に報告いたします」 と書類にサインをするまでは、治療を施してはいけないのだ。 私の調書をとってくれた担当婦警さんは、とても親切な人だった。自分の娘も犬に噛まれて大変な目にあった。あなたの仇はきっと討つからね、などと言ってくれた。 犯人犬の姿を事細かに説明して欲しいといわれたが、実はあまり覚えていない。体長、体重、毛の色、種類、顔の特徴（目の色など）を、質問されたが、あいまいな返事しか出来なかった。 あれから幾年もの月日が流れた。 果たして警察は、無事に私の仇を討ってくれたのだろうか？
